Jetlag, Popcorn und der ganz große Sprung – Studieren in den USA ohne Filter

Erster Abend im Studentenwohnheim. Flurlicht flackert, jemand spielt Gitarre, die Mikrowelle piept im Sekundentakt. Ehrlich gesagt, ich fühlte mich mehr wie in einer Sitcom als in einer Universität. Aber genau so fängt es an. Mit einem chaotischen Mix aus Lachen, Heimweh und der ständigen Suche nach dem richtigen Raumplan.

Mal unter uns: Auf dem Papier klingt „Studieren in den USA“ irgendwie trocken. Kurse belegen, Credits sammeln, Noten schreiben. Fertig. Aber wer schon einmal dort war, weiß, dass es eher wie ein Abenteuerfilm ist. Mitten in der Nacht Pizza bestellen, weil die Bibliothek eh bis 2 Uhr morgens offen ist. Diskussionen im Seminar, die mehr nach Talkshow als nach Unterricht wirken. Und Freundschaften, die beim Wäschewaschen im Keller oder beim Zähneputzen auf dem Flur entstehen.

Natürlich, die Qualität stimmt. Kein Zweifel. Da stehen Professoren vorne, deren Namen in Lehrbüchern gedruckt sind. Hörsäle, die eher an Kinos erinnern. Bibliotheken, in denen man sich verlaufen kann. Aber mal ehrlich – das sind nicht die Momente, die bleiben. Es ist das erste Football-Spiel, bei dem man nur die Hälfte versteht, aber alles mitschreit. Oder Thanksgiving mit einer Gastfamilie, die insistiert, dass man zum vierten Mal Nachschlag nimmt. Oder die erste Nacht, in der man im Pyjama mit Kommilitonen über Politik diskutiert – bis der Morgen graut.

Und dann, zwischendurch, stolpert man online über Seiten wie Legiano Casino und merkt: die Welt ist riesig. Aber gleichzeitig sitzt man da mit einem Coffee-to-go im Hörsaal und denkt: genau hier passiert mein kleines großes Abenteuer.

Studieren in den USA ist kein gerader Weg. Es ist ein Sprung ins Unbekannte. Herzklopfen, Jetlag, Euphorie und ein bisschen Chaos in ständiger Abwechslung. Und irgendwann, wenn das erste „A“ auf dem Zeugnis steht, weiß man: ja – dafür hat sich jede durchlernte Nacht und jedes Heimweh gelohnt.
